Academy of Sciences

One of the tallest buildings in Riga is Academy of Sciences building.
Built right after Second World War, during Soviet age.
Academy was the highest building in Riga for more than 50 years, before Hansabanka Skyscraper was built.

Looks like a very beautiful and majestic building.
There is a building like that in Warsaw. The local people have a rude name for it!
if theres a miss universe of skyscraper this will definitely enter the top 10.

not exaclty :D Riga building is smaller a bit :)
Sometimes it is known by the name of "Stalin's cake"
I think they have one in Kiev as well. I heard it was some sort of status symbol for Soviet-era cities.
From Academy of Sciencies building roof (enter fee for tourists 2 Lat) enjoy the BEST panorama of Riga, because it's the ONLY sight seeing from where you DO NOT SEE this ugly, oppressive architecture. By the way it is an historical withness (and useful r.e.) to be preserved.
